If you've ever used a loofah in the shower, you already know the appeal — a gentle scrub that leaves your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. But if you're still using a conventional loofah, you might be surprised to learn there's a significantly better option: a luffa soap bar.
Yes, luffa and loofah are the same plant — just two different spellings. But a luffa soap bar and a conventional loofah are very different things. Here's why we think the soap bar wins every time.
What Is a Luffa Soap Bar?
A luffa soap bar is a cold-press soap bar with a slice of dried luffa gourd embedded inside. As you use the bar, the luffa is gradually revealed, giving you a built-in exfoliating scrubber that works with the soap rather than separately from it.
At Pacific Coast Soap Works, our luffa bars are handcrafted in BC using the same natural oils, butters, and essential oils as our regular soap bars — the luffa just adds an extra layer of function.
The Problem With Conventional Loofahs
They're a Bacteria Breeding Ground
A conventional loofah — the kind you hang in the shower — stays wet between uses. That warm, damp environment is ideal for bacteria, mould, and mildew to grow. Studies have found that loofahs can harbour significant amounts of bacteria after just a few weeks of use. Most experts recommend replacing them every 3–4 weeks, which adds up quickly.
Most Are Made From Plastic
The majority of loofahs sold today aren't actually luffa at all — they're made from synthetic plastic mesh. These shed microplastics with every use, which go straight down the drain and into waterways. Not great for BC's rivers and coastline.
They Wear Out Fast
Whether plastic or natural, a standalone loofah degrades quickly. The fibres break down, they lose their texture, and they need to be replaced regularly — creating more waste.
Why a Luffa Soap Bar Is Better
Two-in-One Convenience
A luffa soap bar combines your cleanser and your exfoliator into a single bar. No juggling a separate loofah and a bottle of body wash — just one bar that does both jobs beautifully.
Naturally Hygienic
Because the luffa is embedded in soap, it stays in a naturally antibacterial environment between uses. As the bar dries, so does the luffa — dramatically reducing the conditions that allow bacteria to thrive.
Zero Plastic, Zero Waste
Our luffa bars are 100% natural and fully biodegradable. The luffa is a plant. The soap is made from plant-based oils. When the bar is finished, there's nothing left to throw away — and nothing that ends up in a landfill or waterway.
Gentler, More Even Exfoliation
The luffa fibres in our bars provide a consistent, even scrub across your skin — gentler than a rough loofah but more effective than soap alone. It's the kind of exfoliation that leaves your skin genuinely smooth, not irritated.
Long-Lasting
A well-made cold-press soap bar lasts significantly longer than most people expect — typically 4–6 weeks with daily use. The luffa inside lasts just as long as the soap itself, so you're not replacing anything separately.
Our Luffa Bar Lineup
We make luffa bars in a range of scents to suit every preference — from the bug-repelling Lemongrass Luffa to the cooling Peppermint Luffa, the earthy Patchouli Luffa, and the bright Citrus Infusion Luffa. Each one is handcrafted in BC, waterway safe, and vegan.
