It's one of the most common questions we get — and a fair one. If you're considering switching from a bottle of body wash to a handcrafted soap bar, you want to know whether it's actually worth it. How long will it last? Are you getting good value?
The honest answer: it depends. But a well-made cold-press soap bar typically lasts longer than most people expect — and significantly longer than a comparably priced bottle of body wash.
How Long Does a Bar of Soap Last on Average?
For a single person using a bar daily in the shower, a standard cold-press soap bar will typically last 4–6 weeks. Some people get even more out of a bar — up to 8 weeks — depending on how they use and store it.
For context, a 250ml bottle of body wash used daily typically lasts 3–4 weeks. So a soap bar is already competitive on longevity — and usually cheaper per use when you factor in the price.
What Affects How Long a Bar Lasts?
Storage Is the Biggest Factor
The number one soap killer is sitting in a puddle of water. A bar that stays wet between uses will soften, go mushy, and dissolve much faster than it should. The fix is simple: use a well-draining soap dish that lets the bar dry out completely between uses.
Bar Size
Our standard bars weigh approximately 100–120g. Larger bars last longer — simple as that. Our Guest & Travel Soap Slices are smaller by design, intended for travel or sampling.
How Many People Are Using It
A bar shared between two people in the same shower will last roughly half as long. For households, it's worth having a dedicated bar per person, or buying in multiples.
How You Lather
Rubbing the bar directly on your skin uses more soap than lathering in your hands first and applying the lather. Neither is wrong — but if longevity matters to you, the hands-first method is more efficient.
Water Temperature
Hot water softens soap faster. If you're a hot shower person, your bar will soften more quickly during use — another reason good drainage between uses matters.
Tips to Make Your Bar Last Longer
- Use a draining soap dish — this is the single most impactful thing you can do. Bamboo, wood, or ceramic dishes with drainage slots work best
- Keep it away from direct water spray — store your bar on the side of the shower rather than directly under the showerhead
- Let it cure between uses — if you have multiple bars, rotate them so each one gets a chance to fully dry and harden between uses
- Use the ends — when a bar gets small, press the end onto a new bar while both are wet; they'll fuse together and you won't waste a scrap
- Store extras properly — unused bars should be stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight; they'll keep for 1–2 years and actually improve with age as they continue to cure
Is a Soap Bar Better Value Than Body Wash?
In most cases, yes. A $7–$9 handcrafted soap bar that lasts 4–6 weeks works out to roughly $1.50–$2.00 per week — comparable to or cheaper than a mid-range body wash, with none of the plastic packaging.
And unlike body wash, a cold-press soap bar retains natural glycerin, uses no synthetic detergents, and is fully biodegradable. The value goes beyond the price tag.
